about

Friends since the days of the London production of Fela! The Musical at the National Theatre (2010) when they formed part of the band bringing Fela Kuti’s music to life, Tamar Osborn (baritone sax) and Idris Rahman (tenor sax), both accomplished composers in their own rights, had often talked of indulging the idea of recording a fully improvised duo session of sonic exploration.
Each with busy schedules and involved in many other projects (including Collocutor and Ill Considered respectively), this idea finally came into being in the summer of 2019. With no plan except to listen to each other and react, the result is these ten musical conversations.

25% of proceeds will be donated to The Black Curriculum, a social enterprise founded to address the lack of Black British History in the UK curriculum, with a focus on arts-based programmes.

Some reactions to the music:

"A deep & beautiful album of duo improvisations from two of my favourite saxophonists. Idris & Tamar breathe new life into the hallowed instrument every time they play. Their talent, creativity and musical chemistry can be found in abundance on this record."
Oliver Brunetti (Colectivo Futuro/Music Is My Sanctuary)

"This is a revelation. Recorded last summer but somehow in their dangling conversations and lyricism, Tamar and Idris seem to be sonically encapsulating the increasingly distant memories of a vibing lifestyle, the becalmed stillness, the fleeting hope, underlying sadness, the angst and fear that characterise our lives in Lockdown. They often seem to have Gershwin on their minds too, as they step outside of the musical personas they have created for themselves over decade and a half, into a place where contemporary classical and jazz horizons meet. It’s a beguiling, arrhythmic, mediative place to be."
Max Reinhardt (Soho Radio Late Lunch Show, Fridays 1300-1600; BBC Late Junction)

"Two of the most forward-thinking London-based jazz artists have come together to record a series of improvisational duo pieces featuring interweaving layered horns and Eastern melodies, creating a spiritual meditative vibe reminiscent of the calmer side of Pharoah Sanders or Yusef Lateef."
TJ Gorton, BeatCaffeine
